Michael Waller is an award-winning director who has been directing, acting, and writing theatre for over 20 years.
He has worked in theatres all over Canada and the United States. Directing highlights include Othello (Dora Mavor Moore Nomination—Outstanding Direction) and Much Ado about Nothing for Shakespeare in the Rough; Eric Wolfe’s Dear Boss (Dora Mavor Moore Nomination—Outstanding Direction); Sideshow of the Damned, Grendelmaus and the Babysitter for Eldritch Theatre; Sean Reycraft’s popsong (Chalmers Award Winner) for Theatre Direct and Dave Carley’s Walking on Water, Midnight Madness, A View from the Roof, and Taking Liberties.
In addition to plays, Michael has directed many operas. Opera highlights include The Tragedy of Carmen at the Banff Centre and L’Enfant Et Les Sortileges for Wilfred Laurier University. He has also brought back opera to Corner Brook in recent years with a production of Puccini’s Suor Angelica at the Corner Brook Arts and Culture Centre.
Michael’s other Newfoundland work includes directing Jim Cartwright’s Two for Theatre Newfoundland and Meghan Greeley’s Kingdom at the RCA Centre in St. John’s. Michael is a faculty member of the theatre department at Grenfell College-MUN, where he has directed many highly acclaimed student productions.
Michael is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University (BFA Drama), University of Ottawa (MFA Directing), and Stratford Festival’s Birmingham Conservatory. He has assistant-directed at the Stratford Festival, The Shaw Festival, The Banff Centre, Edmonton Opera, Calgary Opera, and Canadian Stage. He is a recipient of the Ken Macdougall Award for Most Promising Director.
